At Belmont University, fraternities and sororities offer students the chance to form strong, lasting friendships with people from different ages, backgrounds, and interests. This provides a support system for students as they adjust to university life. Joining a fraternity or sorority gives students a sense of belonging and provides them with a family-like atmosphere. Members of fraternities and sororities are able to develop close bonds with one another through studying, service, and having fun together.
Additionally, they are able to meet new people through participating in campus, chapter, and community service events. Most fraternities and sororities have names with Greek letters. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many local high school fraternities and sororities became national organizations with a highly evolved structure of government and regularly constituted chapters in various regions. These chapters were not linked to individual high schools but were area-based and often attracted members from several high schools from a given area. Belmont University's mission for fraternity and sorority life is to promote student development by providing opportunities for scholarships, community service, campus participation, and fraternal friendship. This ensures that all members have a safe and high-quality undergraduate experience.
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first inter-university fraternity of Greek letters established for African-American men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven university students who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among people of African descent in this country. Participation in Belmont Fraternity and Sorority Life will provide students with opportunities to grow and develop in a values-based social environment. Members will also have access to leadership opportunities within the fraternity and sorority community as well as within each chapter. Joining a fraternity or sorority is worth the time investment as it offers members friendship, academic support, leadership development, and service opportunities that will help them create a successful future. We welcome any questions about fraternity and sorority life at the Office of Student Engagement.
